What is Plastic Surgery, though?
The most accurate possible definition is that "Plastic surgery is the surgery of the skin and of its components".
Plastic surgery not only is nowadays the most popular surgical specialty, but also the most misunderstood.
It consists of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. People often perceive Plastic as a synonym for Aesthetic Surgery. Although Cosmetic Surgery is an important component of Plastic Surgery, the roots of the specialty are found in Reconstructive Surgery.
There are quite a few cases, however, where the boundaries between Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery merge together. Rhinoplasty, for instance, often treats both functionality and the looks of a nose. Breast reduction restores not only the aesthetics but also the functionality (back pain, dermatitis under the breast) and the psychological balance of the patient in many cases. The same applies for abdominoplasty. Breast augmentation, a theoretically predominantly cosmetic procedure, stimulates femininity and thus enhances both the confidence and the self- esteem of a woman.
Every plastic surgery operation or treatment aims to aesthetic and functional harmony.
